Support Communities Welcoming Asylum Seekers

Our faith exhorts us over and over to provide a welcome to the sojourner, inviting each of us to open our hearts and our communities by loving our neighbor. Join us in urging Congress to fully fund communities with the resources they need to ensure new arrivals have access to food, clothing, shelter, legal orientation, medical care, dignified transportation, and other case management services. The real mark of a country’s values lies in how they treat the most vulnerable, and as asylum seekers arrive they deserve to be treated with dignity and humanity.

A couple weeks ago, Rich Doerrer-Peacock, Randy Mayer, Bill Lyons, Susan Valiquette, two National staff visitors (Rev. Joshua Baird, Global H.O.P.E. Team Leader and Rev. Irene W. Hassan, Minister for Refugee and Migration Services), and I took a trip to Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales, MX, a mission project of the UCC, Lutherans, and Episcopalians. It is an amazing place. Sister Lika Mejia is the director and has been there many years. She has organized a refuge for asylum seekers, a place to heal, rest, and prepare for the next step of their journey.

This Friday, September 30th at 6:30 PM (in the sanctuary of Desert Palm UCC in Tempe) and on Zoom

Join Desert Palm UCC for a few short video clips and some Q & A about Arizona Prop 308 and immigration in general. Their Justice and Witness Committee is working to raise awareness around and to support the pending legislation that will ensure Dreamers and other graduates from Arizona high schools pay in-state tuition.
