In a time of unprecedented backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion, and with deepening divides over race, identity, and power in America, the call to decenter whiteness in our churches is more urgent than ever. We are witnessing attempts to erase the truth of systemic racism and marginalize already vulnerable communities, all while stoking fear and division. As followers of Christ, we are called to stand boldly against such forces, embodying the radical love and justice of Jesus in our words, actions, and faith communities. This is not just a moral duty; it is a core tenet of our faith.
This is holy work. It will not be easy, and it will not be quick. It will require vulnerability, honesty, and a willingness to sit with discomfort. But it is the work to which we are called, and in doing it, we may discover that the Spirit of God is already leading the way, calling us to a deeper understanding of justice, a more expansive love, and a fuller expression of our faith. The courage we seek is already within us, given by the Spirit. Will we have the faith to follow?
Let this be the time we answer that call. Together. Boldly. Faithfully. For the sake of the Gospel and the world we are called to serve.
To support you on this vital journey, the Southwest Conference is thrilled to introduce our new dedicated website section: Decentering Whiteness: Our Journey Together. This new resource is designed to provide your congregation with clear pathways, resources, and support. Our objective is to deepen your understanding of how whiteness has shaped our society and church life, to build a shared vocabulary, and to create a foundation for ongoing transformation. This is a journey we are taking together, and this new section is our shared map and compass.
Next Step: This is a journey we are taking together. We invite you to explore the new website section to see what's in store. In our next post, we'll dive into what "decentering whiteness" actually means.
