More Than a Book: Films, Podcasts, and More in Our Resource Hub

Learning is not limited to books. Our journey of decentering whiteness can be explored through a variety of engaging and thought-provoking media. In our Resource Hub, we've included a collection of documentaries, films, and podcasts to help your congregation learn and grow in different ways. These resources can be a powerful entry point for those who might be hesitant to start with a book, and they are excellent tools for sparking group discussions.

  • Documentaries and Films: A powerful way to visualize history and systemic issues. We recommend films like 13th by Ava DuVernay (Netflix), which explores the history of racial inequality in the U.S. criminal justice system. Another powerful option is Traces of the Trade by Katrina Browne, which follows her family's journey to confront their legacy as the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. These films make abstract concepts concrete and personal.

  • Podcasts: Perfect for listening on the go or for a group listening session. "Seeing White" by Scene on Radio is a must-listen, as it deconstructs the history and meaning of whiteness in America. "Code Switch" by NPR offers a wide range of stories and conversations about race and identity in America, providing a constant stream of new perspectives.

  • Articles and Online Resources: We also have a collection of essential articles and guides, including Peggy McIntosh’s classic “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” a foundational guide to understanding white privilege, and the UCC’s own Sacred Conversations to End Racism (SC2ER) curriculum.

Using these diverse media resources can help you engage a wider range of people in your congregation and cater to different learning styles.
