Just Peace Sunday on September 17

Two years ago, at the 30th General Synod, we marked 30 years as a Just Peace Church. The resolution that passed GS30 called on all congregations of the United Church of CHrist to renew its witness as a Just Peace Church, and to annually mark the Sunday preceding September 21st (which the United Nation recognizes as the "International Day of Prayer for Peace") as Just Peace Sunday.

This year, Just Peace Sunday is September 17th and our theme is Remember, Repent, Renew: The Way of Just Peace. This theme is based on the lectionary passage Genesis 50:15-21 in which Joseph is reconciled to his brothers. We highlight aspects of Just Peacemaking such as repentance and forgiveness, exploring the linkage between the Hebrew concepts of Shalom and T'shuvah. The theme also echoes the invitation issued by the World Council of Churches to join a "Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace."

Worship materials are now posted at Just Peace Sunday Resources.

I believe that the United Church of Christ is called to join in this pilgrimage and Way of Just Peace. For thirty years, we have offered to the world the conviction and hope that "Peace is possible!" I believe it is, and I believe we can build peace together drawing on inspiration from our new vision statement, "United in Christ's love, a just world for all."

Join us on the Way,

Rev. Michael Neuroth
