Called to Care

Called to Care is a resource which helps a church or other organization:

  • develop a caregiving program
  • train caregivers
  • continue to develop and support the program and the caregivers

Caregiving may take many forms, and congregations or organizations may wish to organize some caregiving into programs to make them more helpful and effective.

We offer three hub training locations - click to register at the location of your choice:

September 14–15, 2018: First Congregational UCC, Albuquerque

November 9–10, 2018: Central Arizona, Shadow Rock UCC

December 7–8, 2018: Good Shepherd UCC, Sahuarita

Your caregiver team will choose which training hub they want to attend.

Training will be held in an evening session and all day the following day.

Friday:
6-8 or 9 p.m. (snacks provided by local church)

Saturday:
8 a.m. - Session I
12 p.m. - lunch break (on your own)
1 – 5 p.m. - Session II

The materials referenced in the following can be found at the Called to Care resources page.

Here's what you will need to provide to the caregivers to read BEFORE the training:

  • Pages 29-54 of the Called to Care Manual (the section titled Guidance for Caregivers)

The Called to Care Manual CD includes a PDF of the manual so you can print or share these pages electronically.

Here are the handouts you will need to print and have available for your caregivers during the training:

  • Copies of the Handout 3,4,5,6,7,8 from the Called to Care manual

The Called to Care Manual CD includes a PDF of the manual so you can print these pages.

You will also need to provide each caregiver with a copy of the Pocket Handbook for Caregivers. Five-packs are available from UCC Resources at a cost of $22 per 5/pack. (Use the drop down menu on the resources page to find individual items like the pocket handbooks, pins, reporting cards, etc)

One of the resources we will be using during the training are the Care Cards in the back of the manual. You may want to share those with your caregivers electronically as well. Your purchase of the program allows you to share the entire manual with your caregivers electronically.

Our training time will cover the following:

  • Unit 1 - Entering the Space of Others & Intro to Nurturing Communication (2-3 hours)

  • Unit 2 – Caregiving Situations Didactic and Roleplays (3-4 hours)

  • Unit 3 – Using Faith Resources, Caring for Families (supporting the whole system), Designing your church’s Called to Care program (3-4 hours)

The Called to Care pins make a nice gift ($3.50 each) for each caregiver completing the entire training. You may want to purchase them for presentation to your participants.

I am very much looking forward to partnering with you to bring lay caregiving excellence to your congregations’ ministries.
