Via Rincon UCC - White Privilege: let's talk workshops

December 22, 2016

White Privilege: Let’s Talk

Rincon’s Justice and Witness and Faith Development ministry teams are offering a series of six sessions to discuss the idea of White Privilege. This is a continuation of our commitment to an ongoing Sacred Conversation on Race that Rincon began in October of 2015. Rev. David and Fran Buss will follow the curriculum developed by the United Church of Christ in which some readings are presented to give concepts and direction for reflection,  followed by a good deal of time in conversation.

These are likely to be tender discussions.  We start with the assumption we are all recovering to one degree or another from racism, having grown up in a country in which racism is systemically and structurally reinforced.  The notion of White Privilege and this curriculum may challenge some of our assumptions about race in this country and how we may unwittingly participate in the racial divisions that exist. But with that challenge comes the potential for personal growth as we develop a greater awareness of privilege and its consequences.

The sessions will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday evenings in Fellowship Hall.  The sessions will include a time of worship and prayer, a simple soup supper, reflection exercises, and open discussion.    The series begins on January 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday).  The subsequent sessions are scheduled for February 5, February 19, March 5, March 19, and April 2. It is hoped that spacing the meetings out this way will allow people time to reflect and absorb the content and discussions.

Please share this invitation with others who might be interested in joining the discussions. All are welcome who come with an open heart and mind and a willingness to grow in our understanding and appreciation of each other.  Please contact Fran and David Buss if you would like more information at fldcbuss@cox.net or 520-743-7419 for more information.
