JPANet: We must do more to end gun violence

April 15, 2023 in Faith In Action

Tell Your Elected Leaders: You MUST Act to End Gun Violence

It feels like each week we are grieving yet another tragic loss of life due to gun violence. And it's no wonder; our country is flooded with guns. It’s easier to buy a gun than many other regulated goods, including Sudafed (which requires an I.D. and there’s a limit on the amount you can buy). Nearly half of the civilian owned guns in the world are owned by U.S. citizens. The near idolization of the Second Amendment has led our country to this grievous position.

Our elected leaders have the power to do more to end gun violence. This includes robust background check legislation, closing loopholes on gun sales (making sure it’s difficult for people who want to commit violence to access weapons), safe storage laws, community violence prevention, and importantly an assault and high capacity weapons ban.

Our faith gives us rituals and voice to grieve with those who are mourning. But it also instructs us to let our prayers become actions. To not just lament but work to build a world restored. Our faith compels is to declare that a culture of violence and death is not inevitable. We are not powerless in making these changes; we can take steps to end gun violence. Tell your elected leaders to summon the moral courage and take immediate action.
