Medicaid Advocacy: Tools and Talking Points

July 06, 2017 in Faith In Action

From Michael J. Readinger, President and CEO, The Council for Health & Human Service Ministries, UCC:

In the United States, approximately 1 in 5 Americans receive their healthcare coverage through Medicaid, America’s largest entitlement program.  That population includes the following:

  • 2/3 of seniors living in nursing homes
  • 39% of all children
  • Over 10 million people with disabilities

CHHSM organizations and the people they serve often rely on Medicaid funding to provide basic healthcare support needed to live a full life.

Last week members of the Senate released a ‘discussion draft’ of the Better Care Reconciliation Act, which is meant to replace the Affordable Care Act.  This draft bill dramatically changes the Medicaid program by cutting funding and changing state reimbursement.   If passed, millions of Americans will be at risk of losing their health coverage as early as 2021.

CHHSM is committed to providing resources to our members to support your mission and the people you serve.  To that end, we would like to share with you two resources to aid in your advocacy work.  The Medicaid Talking Points and a Medicaid Advocacy Toolkit will give you guidance as you reach out to elected officials and demand they protect healthcare for the most vulnerable in our society.

Thank you for all that you do.
