Summer Rhythms and Sacred Space

Dear Clergy Colleagues,

As we approach the heart of summer in the Southwest Conference, I hope you’re finding moments to exhale—whether under the desert sun, beside northern pines, or in the familiar stillness of your study. Summer offers us the gift of kairos time: not just to plan or preach, but to pause, reflect, and renew.

Many of you are shifting rhythms—offering simpler worship services, stepping away for continuing education or vacation, or accompanying congregants through seasonal transitions. Wherever you find yourself, may you feel God’s presence not only in your work, but in your rest.

This season is also an invitation to consider:

  • Sabbath Rest: Whether it’s a full sabbatical or a few hours each week unplugged, remember that your well-being is sacred. The SWC staff is praying for you and cheering you on as you seek balance.

  • Creative Ministry: Summer brings new opportunities—book studies, outdoor services, community projects. If you’re trying something new, we’d love to hear about it.

  • Connections: Please stay connected with your clergy colleagues. A phone call or coffee meeting may be just the encouragement someone needs.

And while the days may be long and hot, don’t forget: the Spirit still moves—sometimes with the roar of monsoon thunder, sometimes with the whisper of a quiet breeze.

We see you. We value your ministry. And we are here to support you.

In Christ’s peace and partnership,

Rev. Dr. Derrick Elliott
