Beware: payroll / direct deposit scam on clergy and church offices

August 06, 2022 in Conference News

Another day, another scam: impersonating clergy and emailing their church's office to request that their direct deposit go to a different bank account. This is succeeding and no one is the wiser until pay day and the pastor doesn't receive their direct deposit.

The emails come from a fake email address that closely resembles the pastor's real email address, so there are two things that church offices, finance personnel, payroll people, and treasurers can do to prevent this from happening:

  1. Double-check the email address of any financial request that appears to come from the pastor.

  2. Confirm the request with the pastor via a different channel (text, phone call, in-person, or their church email address).

Be safe out there and "on here."
