Desert Palm UCC youth are participating in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) walk on October 21st. You can donate to the cause and/or look for a walk in your city to support.
NAMI's work is very much in the spirit of our WISE ministry, in that both seek to eradicate the stigma around mental health issues and to provide education and support.

All are welcome to attend the dedication and blessing of the “Homeless Jesus” sculpture being installed at The Church of the Palms UCC at 14808 N Boswell Blvd in Sun City, AZ. The service is at 11 am on November 18. SWC Transitional Conference Minister Dr. Toni Hawkins will provide the blessing.
The art is a seven-foot bronze sculpture by Timothy Schmalz, a Canadian sculptor and a devout Catholic, entitled, “Homeless Jesus”, which depicts Jesus sleeping on a park bench.
His face and hands are obscured under the blanket; the only clue to his identity is the crucifixion wounds on his feet.

First Church UCC Phoenix hopes that some of their friends from other UCC churches who help out at the Welcome Center (and also those who don't) will join this event!
Journalist and scholar, Stephanie Saldana, is going to be in the Tucson/Phoenix area. She wrote a beautiful book What We Remember Will Be Saved: A Story of Refugees and the Things They Carry.
She follows the lives of six refugees from Syria and Iraqi, describing what they saved and how they rebuilt their lives in other countries.

Annually, Church of Beatitudes serves up Labor Day lunch to the seniors, who experience food insecurities, at the Justa Center. It was fantastic to be back in this great facility.

Sunday, September 17, 2 – 5 pm at Desert Palm UCC
UPDATE: The storytelling event has been expanded to become intergenerational because we received some parent/adult interest. So anyone -- adults and teens --can participate.
Tempe’s Desert Palm is hosting an open invitation to Phoenix-area sister campuses to participate in a free storytelling workshop. The interfaith workshop in Desert Palm’s sanctuary will be led by master storytellers, Rev. Doug Bland and Storytelling Institute Faculty Director Liz Warren. Students ages 12-18 will learn how to brainstorm, craft and share at least a 5-minute story on stage. (Pizza, drinks and dessert will be served after the workshop.)

The movie Oppenheimer is big news these days. Unfortunately, they didn’t include the confirmation of African American scientists. Because of that:
First Congregational Albuquerque will highlight the lives of five of the nine Black scientists who participated in the Manhattan Project over the next several weeks. A photograph of one of the five scientists along with pertinent facts about their lives will be shown on screen during announcements and displayed on a bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

“I hoped our shared faith would provide enough common ground. I was a bit naive.
“As our last meeting of an inter-congregational experiment in dialogue was drawing to a close, I felt pleased. The atmosphere was warm and congenial. We’d talked about important subjects and about our most deeply held values in a way that seemed promising for further conversation. The experiment had been conceived as an exercise in listening between members of my very liberal congregation, First Congregational United Church of Christ in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and those of an evangelical congregation in the same town, and we had done just what we hoped.
“Then came the written evaluations and several private follow-up conversations. The experiment was not as rosy as I had perceived it.”
