During the summer months at First Church Phoenix, the Unhoused Pantry closes, and First Church opens a heat respite cooling center in the Fellowship Hall, providing a cool and safe space where guests receive snacks, water, and relief from the daytime heat.
First Church, partnered with Grace Lutheran, is 1 out of 21 Respite Centers, and one of the very few that are open on Sundays, and allow pets and belongings. Respite means that community members are able to get some rest and fall asleep. Stop by, it's like nap time at preschool.
When heat respite ends August 10, the Pantry will reopen.
The Unhoused Pantry is a compassionate initiative dedicated to serving individuals who are unsheltered by providing essential resources with dignity and care. Recognizing the challenges faced by the unhoused community, the pantry offers nutritious meals, hygiene products and other necessities to support daily well-being. We are so grateful for the generosity of Powered by Love that now runs the Pantry. This all operates on a volunteer basis and is sustained through generous donations.
The pantry functions as more than just a distribution center; it's a place of connection and respect. Visitors are welcomed without judgement, fostering a sense of belonging and hope. The church's commitment to justice and hospitality ensures that everyone who comes finds not only sustenance but also warmth and encouragement.
The pantry's mission aligns with First Church UCC's broader vision of inclusivity and social responsibility. Through partnerships with local organizations like Powered By Love and all of our wonderful volunteers, the initiative continues to grow, reaching more people in need. Whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy, the pantry invites you to take part in its mission of care, compassion and empowerment.
