Jottings 10/26/2026

October 26, 2026 in Church News

The Good Shepherd UCC's Annual Mission Fair is Sunday, November 15 between worship services. This fair gives the congregation the opportunity to donate to four organizations that support our neighbors near and far.  On the Sundays before the fair: October 25, November 1 and 8, there will be a presentation of each of the organizations during the services. The four organizations are The Amado Youth Center, The Dee and Pres Johnson Probigua Scholarship Fund, Tucson Interfaith HIV and AIDS Network (TIHAN), and Casa de la Misericordia de Todos los Países.

Rincon Congregational's November Banned Books were donated by Judy J. In addition to supporting their cart, she also supported Friends of the Pima County Public Library by purchasing them there. Located at 2230 N. Country Club Road in Tucson, the Friends Book Store is a great place to shop for your next book, donate books from your collection and at the same time, support their reading programs. Judy chose early reader and chapter books: “Pink is For Boys,” “Just Ask,” “If I Ran the Zoo” and “Charlotte’s Web” and for teens and adult readers, copies of “I am Malala,” “Angels in America”- a play, and the classics, “Ethan Fromm” and “Oh Pioneers.” The reasons the books were banned are posted in the inside front covers.

This past weekend, First Congregational Church Albuquerque celebrated 146 years as a congregation and 25 years as an Open and Affirming congregation. They gathered on Saturday evening for food, conversation, a program, and line dancing, and enjoyed some fun music on Sunday along with a celebration of pie and a hymn sing.

Desert Palm UCC invites the wider community to a vibrant festival celebrating creativity, connection, and remembrance. The event will feature live music by church ensembles and guest performers, visual arts displays and demonstrations, hands-on activities for all ages, a Día de Muertos observance, festival food, and family-friendly fun including games, face painting, and a costume contest. The festival also serves as a fundraiser supporting Desert Palm's Music and Arts Ministry, helping sustain creative programs that enrich worship and community life.

From Taos UCC: The Taos United Community Church Medical Debt Relief Project is launching its ninth year of helping local families by purchasing and forgiving uncollectible medical debt owed to Holy Cross Hospital. Since the program began, donors have helped eliminate more than $6.7 million in medical debt for residents of Taos County. Contributions for the 2026 campaign are being accepted through November 12, with debt forgiveness letters expected to be mailed before Christmas. Faith communities, individuals, businesses, and foundations are invited to participate in this life-changing ministry of compassion and financial relief.

Tohono O’odham Nation Fights Border Wall Land Desecration: Tribal leaders from the Tohono O’odham Nation are asking people of faith for prayer and support as they oppose the destruction of sacred sites on their land to build a border wall. Invite your faith community to pray for the Tohono O’odham Nation. Clergy and spiritual leaders, please show your support by joining a letter from community leaders. Learn more.

Church Funds and Donor Intent: The Office of General Counsel shares some helpful tips on how to use donations to church ministry properly, and what to look out for legally. Sometimes, donors give funds for a particular purpose. The following is a fictional story, but some United Church of Christ churches have had similar experiences. Has your church experienced this? Council for Health and Human Service Ministries, UCC: Registration is open for CHHSM’s 2027 Annual Gathering in Houston, March 16-18. The theme of the 2027 Annual Gathering is “To the Stars through Difficulties,” a reference to Houston’s nickname, “Space City,” and the home of the Johnson Space Center, where space program astronauts live and train. It evokes the human spirit and inspiration necessary not only in the space program, but also in the day-to-day front-line work of CHHSM members and their staff. For details and scholarship and sponsorship information, click here.
