First Albuquerque celebrates Black History Month with four events

First Congregational Albuquerque will celebrate Black History Month with Rev. Dr. Derrick Elliott as guest preacher on February 8th.

On February 15th, Ernest McMillan, a veteran human rights activist will speak about his experiences in worship. After the service, he will be in conversation with Rev. AO Ferguson about how lessons from the Civil Rights Movement can be applied to the authoritative fascism we're facing today. His books will be available for purchase.

On February 22nd, Rev. Dr. Ryan Tate will preach and present a concert after worship about the Africana History of the Americas and Latine Identity.

We live in fraught times. We need reminders of the power of community, and the power of singing together. In that spirit, we invite you to a very special event!

First Congregational United Church of Christ Albuquerque and the New Mexico Peace Choir are sponsoring a singing workshop, “Tightening the Weave of Community Through Song,” led by the singular musician-activist Melanie DeMore. All skill and experience levels are welcome! Melanie is a Grammy-nominated singer/composer, choral conductor, music director and vocal activist who believes in the power of voices raised together.

Saturday, February 28, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with lunch provided.

Cost is $20 per person. Register and pay through the QR code on the flyer or go to https://givebutter.com/p0Z7Ji

We ask that participants bring a water bottle—singing can be dehydrating, and this simple action helps the environment.

Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 20.

If you haven’t heard of Melanie, go here to see and hear her in action!
