The “Radical Inclusion Through the Arts Project” series at Desert Palm welcomes the amazing Jazz of Claudia Bloom & Mary Petrich. Nov. 20th at 7 pm at Desert Palm, 1230 E Guadalupe, Tempe. Since receiving a personal development grant 6 years ago, saxophonist Mary Petrich and pianist Claudia Bloom have continued to develop opportunities for concerts and presentations that highlight the music of women in jazz through the Women’s Jazz Collective. The Women’s Jazz Collective and the Nash Women’s Initiative feature both contemporary and historical jazz music written, arranged and performed by women who are well known in their fields. The story of jazz in America starts in the early 1900’s and includes many women who made significant contributions but did not receive the credit and recognition that their male counterparts obtained.

Vantage West Credit Union is one of the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center’s (SFB-CRC’s) closest and most trusted friends. Their partnership has grown immeasurably in the last year, thanks to a shared emphasis on doing all we can to work with and support the “whole person.” Vantage West staff members are on site at food distributions to assist participants by answering banking and financial questions and offering no pressure information on banking services should someone want help in opening an account. They make financial coaches available to all and provide workshops and presentations for food bank and resource center participants to build their financial aptitudes and capabilities. Recently, Vantage West sponsored SFB-CRC’s application for a grant that will provide significant support for an innovative new initiative called Project Verde: ag Driven. The press release reads in part that “Vantage West Credit Union, in collaboration with Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, will deliver $150,000 to Sahuarita Food Bank in support of their efforts to drive economic growth, enhance workforce development, and create equitable opportunities for underserved communities throughout Southern Arizona.” “Sahuarita Food Bank & Community Resource Center’s mission is to find innovative and resourceful ways to mitigate hunger. Project Verde will create a demonstration project to grow food using a large-scale hydroponic system in the challenging environment of the Southwest desert. Using off-the-shelf materials, this initiative aims to show that hydroponic farming can be affordable, create jobs, and generate surplus food for lower-income clients. It is designed to be scalable, documenting construction and operation processes to enable replication by others. AHEAD funds will help the container farm and support staff salaries.” SFB-CRC was started by and is a mission of The Good Shepherd UCC.
Thank you to all the UCC churches collecting food for their neighbors! I don’t think I read any of your weekly Newsletters that didn’t have a plea for food donations! Holly
