JPANet: The Continued Fight for Reproductive Justice

July 02, 2022 in Faith In Action

Today we face a new landscape of abortion access in the United States. On Friday, June 24, 2022 the Supreme Court issued a decision in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, upholding a state ban and abandoning the right to abortion, effectively overturning the protections established in 1973 with Roe v. Wade.

Over the past forty years the United Church of Christ General Synod has affirmed a person’s right to follow their own agency on abortion access and the importance of reproductive rights, that has not changed. These ongoing battles call for a faithful and strong response affirming an individual’s self-determination for their own body.

Below is a list of resources including stories, advocacy actions, and theological and liturgical grounding for prayerfully considering the issues around reproductive justice. There are worship resources to use in your congregation as we process this news and in preparation for the next part of this struggle, a social media and messaging toolkit, and links to past UCC actions on reproductive health access. We hope this will complement the work many of you are already doing and that these resources can be shaped and molded to suit your particular needs and community.

  • Contact Congress and urge them to take immediate action to protect reproductive health care and abortion access,

  • Use our reproductive justice messaging toolkit,

  • Learn about the landscape of abortion legislation in your state,

  • 'We will stand with you in protest,' read the UCC Officers' statement following the SCOTUS decision,

  • Worship resources faithfully supporting reproductive justice,

  • The UCC Reproductive Justice webpage.

The work continues and we remain with you in the protest.
